LG V30 Smartphone Will Have Always-On Display, Facial Recognition

Blaze Display Technology Co., Ltd. | Updated: Aug 16, 2017

【R&D Department of Blaze Display】LG’s upcoming “phablet” smartphone, the V30, will be equipped with the latest version of their custom Android launcher UX 6.0+, supporting a number of new features.

The phone will launch with what the company calls its first “OLED FullVision display” which promises to blend the advantages of OLED technology with the additional screen surface the 18:9 aspect ratio provides.

Display Deviations

OLED displays, which are more efficient and provide higher contrast than regular LCD ones, do not require any backlighting in order to display an image since they emit light themselves. Making use of this technology, the phone’s always-on display can be used to show the clock, quick tools, the music player or even a photograph while the phone is off. However, the latter option will probably not be ideal for battery life since showing an image with low contrast would offset the efficiency that OLED technology provides.

Whereas previously the LG V20 featured a small “second screen” above the regular one, the LG V30 has a “floating bar” that will allow “quick access to frequently used functions”. This ditches the series’ characteristic ticker display for something more reminiscent of the sidebar in Samsung’s Galaxy Edge series. It remains to be seen if this will be a serious replacement or if it will mostly just get in the way.

In addition, the V30 will include new security features, such as facial recognition technology that will work “even when the phone’s display is off” as well as incorporating Qualcomm’s “Aqstic” voice recognition technology.
